YouTube Shorts ads: what works in 2026

Shorts ads sit between creators' videos and can be swiped away instantly. The button arrives at 3 or 10 seconds depending on how you buy them, and only the first minute ever plays.

A Shorts ad appears between organic Shorts, full screen and vertical, and the viewer can skip it the same way they skip any Short: by swiping. There is no five second grace period and no Skip button. That single fact shapes everything about how Shorts ads should be made, and it is why a cut-down of a TV ad so often fails there.

The details below are from Google Ads Help and YouTube's own announcements, checked in September 2026.

Where they run

Shorts ads run in the YouTube app on phones, on desktop, on tablets and on TV screens. Since December 2025 they also run on YouTube's mobile website. In the same update, YouTube turned on comments for eligible Shorts ads, so an ad can gather replies like any other Short. That is good for reach and a reason to have someone watching the comments.

Length: only the first minute plays

A Shorts ad can be up to three minutes long, but only the first 60 seconds play in the Shorts feed. Google recommends keeping it under a minute, in vertical 9:16. In practice, most Shorts ads that hold attention are far shorter than that, with the product or the point in the first two seconds.

Sound matters more than on most placements. Google says ads with sound have been shown to increase conversions by over 20 percent in Shorts, and its guidance is to make the ad feel like the organic content around it, using real creator footage where possible.

When the button appears

The call to action on a Shorts ad is a button near the bottom of the screen, and its timing depends on the campaign type. Google's Shorts specs are explicit:

  • Performance Max, App and Demand Gen campaigns: the button appears 3 seconds into the ad.
  • Video views and Video reach campaigns: the button appears at 10 seconds.

Ten seconds is a long time in a feed people swipe through. If a Shorts ad is bought for reach or views, the first ten seconds have to make their point without a button, and the button is a bonus for the viewers who stay. If the goal is a click, Demand Gen gives the ad a button almost immediately.

The words: one line on a phone

Google recommends a headline of up to 40 characters and a description of up to 90. On a phone, text beyond one line is cut; on desktop and TV screens, beyond two. So the first line is, in effect, the whole description for most viewers. Put the reason to care there, not the brand's slogan.

Google does not publish a safe zone for Shorts ads. The channel name, the description, the button and the rail of like, comment and share buttons sit over the bottom and the right of the video, so keep the words and the product clear of those areas, in the middle of the frame.

How to buy them

  • Demand Gen: the button at 3 seconds, and optimisation toward clicks or conversions. Since April 2026 it can also optimise toward YouTube view-through conversions.
  • Video views: Shorts alongside skippable in-stream and in-feed. On Shorts, a view counts at 10 seconds.
  • Video reach: Shorts are available only with the efficient reach goal, by choosing the multi-format option.
  • Performance Max and App campaigns: Shorts as one of many placements, chosen by Google.
  • Reservations: Shorts can be bought in advance at a fixed price.

Creators are the strongest creative

YouTube has been moving its brand partnership tools toward Shorts. In March 2026 it renamed BrandConnect as YouTube Creator Partnerships, and partnership ads became creator partnerships boost, which lets a brand put paid media behind a creator's video in Demand Gen, Video reach and Video views campaigns. YouTube says boosting creator videos on Shorts has given an average 30 percent increase in conversion lift. Since May 2026, those creator videos can be boosted straight from the Demand Gen asset picker.

Creators can also add a single link to a brand partner's site in a branded Short, shown as a sticker on screen and in the description. It does not appear on paid impressions, so it helps the organic life of the video rather than the ad.

For agencies, this changes the brief. The best Shorts ad is often a creator's Short that is already performing, boosted with paid media, rather than a brand edit made for the format. Book creators with that in mind, and agree the usage and boosting rights in the contract before the video is made.

Why Shorts in the Gulf

Google's own research gives a reason to add Shorts to a Meta and TikTok plan. In November 2025, citing GWI data, it reported that 61 percent of YouTube Shorts users in Saudi Arabia and 54 percent in the UAE say they do not use Instagram Reels. It also said the Creator Partnerships Hub and Open Call would launch in the Middle East and North Africa in 2026. Treat vendor research with the usual caution, but the reach that Shorts adds to a Reels plan is real.

A checklist for a Shorts ad

  • Vertical, with sound, and under a minute, with the point in the first two seconds.
  • If bought for reach or views, the first ten seconds work without the button.
  • A headline under 40 characters and a first line of description that stands alone.
  • Nothing important in the bottom or right of the frame.
  • Creator footage where possible, with boosting rights agreed in the contract.

The ad mockup generator on this site draws a Shorts ad full screen, with the channel, the Sponsored line, the description cut to one line and the white button, so you can check the frame before it goes into Google Ads.
