WebP is usually the smallest and opens in every current browser; JPG is the safe choice for email and older apps. Saving again also removes hidden photo details, such as the location.

Social platforms compress what you upload again, so there is no need to go below High quality for a post: upload a clean picture at the platform’s size and let it do its own.

Getting it right

Smaller without looking worse

  • Resize first. A 6000 pixel photo shown 1200 pixels wide carries 25 times the pixels it needs. Setting the longest side saves more than lowering the quality.
  • Keep the original. Compress a copy for each use; never save over the only full-quality file.
  • Check faces and text. They show compression first. If either looks soft, step the quality up one.

Common questions

Are my pictures uploaded?

No. Your browser opens each picture, redraws it at the size you choose and saves it again. The pictures never leave your device, so client work and unreleased campaigns are safe to use here.

JPG, PNG or WebP?

WebP is usually the smallest for the same look and opens in every current browser. JPG is the safe choice for email, older apps and anyone who will edit the file. PNG is for graphics with sharp edges or see-through parts; it has no quality setting, so it shrinks mainly by making the picture smaller.

How do I get a picture under 100 KB?

Choose File size limit and Under 100 KB. The compressor tries quality levels until it finds the best one that fits. If even the lowest quality is too big, it says so: choose a smaller longest side, such as 1080 pixels, and it will fit.

Why is my picture not smaller?

Some pictures are already saved about as small as they can be. When saving again would make the file bigger, the compressor keeps your original and says so, rather than handing you a worse copy.

Does it remove the location from photos?

Yes. Saving through the browser drops the hidden details a camera or phone stores in a photo, such as the camera model and the GPS location.
