TikTok Spark Ads: running creators' posts as ads

Spark Ads put paid reach behind a real TikTok post, with the creator's name, caption and engagement intact. Here is how the permission works, what can go wrong, and what to agree with the creator first.

The ads that work best on TikTok rarely look like ads. They look like a creator talking to camera, with a caption in their own voice and a comment section full of real replies. Spark Ads are how a brand buys that: instead of uploading a video to Ads Manager, the advertiser puts paid reach behind a post that already exists on TikTok, either the brand's own or a creator's.

The details below come from TikTok's Ads Manager help pages and newsroom, checked in September 2026.

What a Spark Ad keeps

TikTok describes Spark Ads as a native format that uses organic posts and their features in advertising. In practice that means the ad is the post. The display name and the caption come from the original and cannot be edited when the ad is created. Tapping the profile picture or name goes to the owner's profile, not the brand's. And every like, comment and share the ad earns is attributed to the original post, so a campaign also builds the creator's video.

  • The caption is taken from the post, shown up to four lines, hashtags and all. Ads that are not Spark Ads cannot carry hashtags, mentions or links in the caption.
  • The profile picture is the account's own.
  • A private video becomes public once it is used in a campaign, so never authorise a draft the creator did not mean to publish.
  • Each Ads Manager account can hold up to 10,000 Spark Ads.

How the permission works

A creator gives an advertiser permission by generating a code for a specific video. In the TikTok app, they open the video, tap the three dots, choose Ad settings and tap Generate. They choose how long the permission lasts: 7, 30, 60 or 365 days. The creator sends the code to the advertiser, who enters it in Ads Manager; up to 20 codes can be entered at once. A duet or stitch needs a code from both creators.

Two failures are common, and both are avoidable. The first is a code that runs out before the campaign does. TikTok flags an authorisation that ends before the ad's end date, and an expired authorisation shows as an error in Ads Manager. The second is a creator withdrawing permission mid-flight, which shows in Ads Manager as Post authorization revoked. Both are contract problems, not technical ones.

Put it in the contract first

A Spark Ad is paid media behind a creator's work, and it should be priced and agreed as such before the video is made. The booking should say:

  • Which videos can be run as Spark Ads, and for how long. Ask for a code at least as long as the campaign, with a margin for extensions.
  • The fee for paid usage, on top of the fee for the post. Boosting a creator's video multiplies its reach, and the creator's rate should reflect it.
  • That the creator will not withdraw the code or delete the video during the agreed period.
  • Who approves the caption, since it cannot be changed once the ad is running.
  • The disclosure: paid and gifted content should use TikTok's branded content setting.

In the UAE, a creator publishing advertising needs the advertiser permit. TikTok's own pages do not mention it, but the rule applies to the post whatever the platform does, and checking it belongs in the booking process, before the contract is signed.

Music is the trap

Creators use trending sounds, and a trending sound is often a commercial track the creator was allowed to use in an ordinary post. TikTok's rule for businesses is that ads, branded content and organic content should use its Commercial Music Library, which holds around a million pre-cleared tracks. For other people's original sounds, TikTok's advice is to consult your legal team. Before a creator's post becomes an ad, check what the sound is, and ask for a version with library music if needed.

Links and landing pages

Spark Ads carry the call to action button like any other ad. Some advertisers can also add a link to the organic post itself, called an organic anchor, which requires the TikTok Pixel and a verified account. TikTok also offers paid and organic optimisation, which adds an anchor link to the organic post at no cost; it works only with Spark Ads and is available in every Spark Ads market except the United States.

Finding creators: TikTok One

TikTok One, launched in 2024, absorbed the old Creator Marketplace and is where TikTok wants brands to find and brief creators. It suggests videos that would work as Spark Ads, and advertisers can request authorisation inside it and then publish the authorised post in Ads Manager. Creators must be 18 or over and live in a market where TikTok One has launched, so check availability for your client's market before building a plan around it.

Automation is catching up

TikTok's automated campaigns now handle Spark Ads too. Since October 2025, Smart+ has run manual and automated campaigns in one setup flow, with asset groups of creative, a simpler Spark Ads setup and the objectives traffic, sales, lead generation and app promotion. TikTok's Symphony tools generate and edit video with AI; content made with Symphony is automatically labelled as AI-generated, which clients should know before approving it.

Policy points for the Gulf

TikTok treats the UAE and Saudi Arabia as one group in its ads policies, and a few rules catch agencies out. Financial services ads must be licensed locally and restricted to people aged 18 and over. Crypto ads are allowed only with a trade licence that permits virtual asset business, also restricted to 18 and over. Horoscope and fortune-telling ads are not allowed in either country. Branded content about food must respect local cultural and religious restrictions.

The scale is real. TikTok's own study with Redseer, published in September 2025, counted more than a million creators and more than 170,000 small businesses on TikTok in Saudi Arabia. A July 2026 study for the UAE put the number of small businesses running TikTok ads there at more than 70,000.

The free TikTok engagement rate calculator on this site shows how a creator's recent videos perform against accounts of the same size, which is the first check before paying to boost one. The influencer rate calculator gives a starting rate for the post; the paid usage for a Spark Ad should be priced on top of it.
