TikTok's automated campaign type, Smart+, started as an all-or-nothing option: give TikTok the budget and the creative, and let it decide the rest. That changed in October 2025, when TikTok rebuilt it as one setup flow that can run fully automated, partly automated or fully manual. In 2026 TikTok kept adding to it, and it is now the default starting point for most performance campaigns. Much of what is written about it dates the change to 2026 and gets the limits wrong, so here is the record.
What changed, and when
- October 2025: one creation flow for manual and automated campaigns, with control module by module; Symphony Automation to suggest and enhance creative; and a Google Analytics integration. TikTok said the Google Analytics integration produced 54 percent more conversions and a 27 percent lower cost per action in testing, and that one in four of the conversions it attributes happen when someone sees an ad and later goes straight to the site.
- May 2026, at TikTok World: automation switched on or off separately for targeting, budget, catalogue ads and placements; manual placement choices; the traffic objective; Auto Selection, which pools creator, product and AI creative and picks what performs; Asset Manager for catalogues and creative; AI-written reporting summaries in early access; and automatic translation and dubbing into more than 50 languages.
- July 2026: TikTok's product preview for the third quarter said Smart+ is expanding to Search Ads campaigns, and Auto Selection to lead generation. It gave no dates or markets.
What you can still control
- Objectives: traffic, sales, lead generation and app promotion.
- Targeting, at three levels. Audience controls such as minimum age, language and exclusions are enforced. Audience suggestions such as age, gender and interests guide the system but are not guaranteed. Full custom targeting (location, age, gender, languages, audiences, interests, device and more) is available, with TikTok's warning that it may limit delivery.
- Placements: automatic, or chosen manually from TikTok, Pangle, Lemon8 and the Global App Bundle where available.
- Budget: one budget for the campaign, or separate budgets per ad group. TikTok says lifetime budgets are now available for fully automated campaigns.
- Bidding: target cost per action, target return on ad spend, and cost cap.
- Creative: which creative combinations run, several landing page URLs, reporting per creative, and whether Symphony may enhance the ads.
The limits, and a contradiction
TikTok's own pages disagree on how much a campaign can hold. Its help page on the upgraded Smart+ says up to 50 asset groups. Its May 2026 business blog and a second help page describe up to 30 ad groups per campaign, 30 asset groups per ad group and 50 creatives per asset group. The second reading is the more detailed and consistent one, but check inside Ads Manager before planning a structure around either.
Spark Ads inside Smart+
- Spark Ads, which run a creator's or the brand's own organic post as an ad, can sit alongside standard ads in the same ad group.
- Creative can come from several TikTok accounts in one campaign.
- An ad account can hold up to 10,000 Spark Ads.
- Once a post is authorised as an ad, its caption cannot be edited, so get the caption approved before the creator shares the authorisation code.
What TikTok claims, and how to test it
TikTok says Smart+ catalogue ads improved cost per action by 29 percent compared with manual campaigns in its 2025 global testing. That is TikTok's figure about its own product. The fair test for a client is a split: the same budget and creative in a manual campaign and in Smart+, run long enough to leave the learning phase, and judged on the client's own conversion data rather than TikTok's attribution alone.
How Gulf agencies are using it
TikTok's Ramadan 2026 playbook for small businesses in the Middle East recommends Smart+ for website, catalogue and lead generation campaigns, alongside messaging ads. Ramadan shifts when people watch, often late into the night, and automated bidding adjusts to that faster than manual schedules can.
A few habits help:
- Start with automation on, and use audience controls for what must not change. Financial services and crypto ads in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, for example, must only reach people aged 18 and over.
- Give the system real variety. Several distinct ideas in each asset group teach it more than many versions of one.
- Watch the reporting per creative and retire what fails, rather than rebuilding the campaign, which restarts learning.
- Send conversions through TikTok's Events API or the Google Analytics integration, not only the pixel.
